Tacticon and Labor Day (US)

Well, Tacticon has come and gone, and we had a great time! The convention was staffed by a different group of organizers this time around, and the venue had switched from Aurora to Colorado Springs. There were a few other changes as well, and it was an interesting switch for the convention overall.

We love seeing some of our favorite conventions try new things and expand to different areas. This time around there were more Cosplay aspects than the Tacticons we had previously attended, and there was also a strong showing for war gaming, board gaming, and computer gaming. The vendor hall was chock full of artists and had a spectacular showing for Star Wars, particularly by the 501st, a charity organization that has done some pretty incredible things (You should take a few minutes and check them out: http://501stlegioncharity.com)!

Wellstone City Wednesday – The Shadow of the Blackhand

Yesterday morning, the Chief of Police was captured by a rogue cell from within Blackhand Security. They car jacked him and kidnapped him outside of his home while he was on his way to work; this was part of an ongoing series of hits between the police and Blackhand in the Battery. The carjacking and kidnapping is by far the boldest move, but the police are worried about escalation. The media has been made aware of this, but so far, they are managing to keep a lid on it.

The PCs hear about the incidents from a rogue member of Blackhand Security; he just wants it all to stop before things turn to an all-out war between the private security force and the police. A duo of Albanians has also been tapped; they are fresh upstarts that want to gain a little influence by helping, but they know they are horribly out-gunned here, and they promise to give a little support to the PCs as needed.

A Thule and His Money…

I have a couple things I want to say before the press release that would normally go here…  I wanted to take a few minutes and tell you how excited I am about our new release A Thule and His Money.
This one has been a really long time coming, and you know what? That’s ok, and here’s why.

It’s awesome. (I can tell you that without even feeling weird because I didn’t write it, put art in it, edit it or anything. My entire JOB in this release is writing this post, something I normally never do, and sharing some links. I didn’t tell them I was going to rave about it this way but shhh, that’ll be our little secret) Now, I tell Ben and Kevin all the time how much I like their stuff, but this one, this is pretty special.  Seriously, you want to take a look at this even if you haven’t taken the time to fall in love with Wellstone City before.  I think Kevin has been working on this one almost as long as I’ve been working here and I’ve never heard him as excited about something as he was with this release. He said yesterday or the day before he’s really happy with it and feels like it’s some of his best work. If you know Kevin, you know that’s pretty exciting!

Wellstone City, 1937

It’s hot, and it’s about to get hotter.

A letter was delivered by courier and it asks you to have a meeting at the Three Oaks. You know the place…it’s that ritzy joint in Old Fort. Some guy named Van Hammer. Sounds familiar, but you can’t quite place it. Sounds kind of dangerous, and you can picture what happens when people disappoint him. That and he gave you $100 just to show up with a promise of more.  A hundred bucks! That’s a good chunk of a new car!

Maybe it won’t hurt to see what he needs. Or maybe it’ll hurt like hell.

Join your characters as they start in Wellstone City after a meeting out of the blue, with a promise of a huge pay check. They just have to travel to the mainland to get some antique from a retiree and then catch a zeppelin to Greece. But, a simple smash and grab isn’t so simple when dealing with internal power struggles with two separate secret societies, especially when they’re both telling you different sides of the truth. Let your characters sort out their own destiny as they choose what side to align themselves with. 

If they survive.

 

So now, I’d like to personally invite each of you to step into what is already being considered the “most pulp-driven adventure” that Silver Gryphon Games has ever produced…and those aren’t MY words. I already told you what I thought right before I shared that with you.

So go on…

Start with your characters in Wellstone City and travel with them to the mainland, take a zeppelin across the Atlantic, and land in picturesque Greece.

Along the way fight with and against two Secret Societies as they wage a silent war against each other for control of a single artifact, the Orb of Akrotiri!

Finish the adventure off by getting the large-scale maps from Fabled Environments in PDF and print off the Mansion and the Airship as many times as you need, or purchase them in large-sized, already printed, ready to use versions of the Mansion and the Airship, right from Silver Gryphon Games

Creativity Challenge, Day 18!

Today’s challenge asks you to draw inspiration from pulp fiction. Whether that’s Pulp Fiction the movie, an old Conan the Barbarian tale, or some other story from the heyday of pulp, is entirely up to you.

This fits really well with Savage Worlds, so if you’re not feeling the visual medium today, go right ahead and submit something for that system!

Wellstone City Wednesday – Running the Good Guys

Wellstone City is set up to run the criminals. It’s a dirty, ugly place that is full of dirty, corrupt people. It is written from the stand point of assuming that the PCs are cons and criminals that are just as bad as the other people they are fighting against. Sometimes they’re worse.

But that’s not for everyone. Sometimes you want to run the knights in shining armor; those that use the same tools as the criminals but use them to make the city a better place. There are many examples of this in television and literature; from Sam Slade the iconic detective to the crew of the Leverage television show. There is this over-reaching theme of the good guys sticking it to the bad guys by using their own tactics and technology against them.

Wellstone City Wednesday – The Adventure Deck

Well, it’s been long awaited, and long discussed, but it’s finally coming: the Wellstone City Adventure Deck is ready for play testing at the end of the week! We’ve contacted a couple of individuals about getting some very rough copies of the initial manuscript. It’ll be stress tested, broken, torn apart, and then we’ll rebuild it from their notes.

The deck right now is just a set of rules; it uses any standard deck of cards to draw from. The draws are complicated enough that I don’t think it’ll be transformed into a deck of playing cards (unlike the Encounter Deck, which we have cards potentially in place to do so but we need a LOT of art to make that happen). The draws are pretty simple, and you get some fantastic results. Kevin’s first test run of it actually came very close to Schroedinger’s Box, which is not an overly simple adventure in the first place.

Wellstone City Wednesday – The Adventure Deck!

This one has been a long time in coming, but we finally have a mostly functioning Adventure Generator for Wellstone City! Kevin still has some finishing touches to add, but there’s no reason why it won’t go into play test mode later this week! We already have a few groups selected to see what kind of craziness can be generated, and as one of Kevin’s first attempts during the writing process, he drew the basic plot of Schrödinger’s Box! We’re considering that a success.

This deck design works for Savage Worlds as well as Æther, allowing fans of either system to get the same great results. It functions independently of the Encounter Deck, and the Encounter Deck can be used with the Adventure Deck, just as it can with any other Wellstone City Chronicle!

We’ll have more on this as it gets further along in development! Stay tuned, and for the mean time, feel free to pick up Wellstone City for Savage Worlds or the Æther Core Book which contains the setting for the Æther system!
